My Story – Julie Adams
I’m Julie Adams, the HR and Compliance Manager at AGS Support. I am thrilled to be part of this incredible organisation. At AGS, I have the privilege of supporting our dedicated team in delivering high-quality housing support services. Today, I want to share a bit about my journey in supported housing and my passion for creating a nurturing and compassionate work environment.
Where it Started
Born in Southsea and raised in Salisbury, there is no denying I’m a Southerner. My career in the housing sector started back in 1984 on the beautiful Isle of Wight. I joined the Isle of Wight Housing Association as a Housing Officer. It was there that I discovered my passion for supporting vulnerable individuals. The association had a strong focus on supported housing. As a result, a significant portion of its housing was dedicated to providing safe, supported housing. Safe havens for young people, individuals with mental health challenges, those struggling with substance abuse, and individuals with learning disabilities. This experience shaped my understanding of the transformative power of supported housing. Consequently igniting my commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing housing insecurity.
The Next Milestone
As a result of this experience, and in pursuit of knowledge and professional growth, I decided to further my education and obtained my Housing degree in 1998. Reflecting on it now, it was truly a milestone in my career. Getting the degree deepened my understanding of housing management and the complexities surrounding homelessness. During this time, I became a member of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and eventually achieved the esteemed status of Fellow Member. This was a touching recognition of my contribution to the housing sector.
Throughout my career, I had the privilege of working with several housing associations, including Signpost Housing Association in Blandford, Dorset. At Signpost, I started as a Housing Manager and eventually became the Director, responsible for all aspects of housing management, partner collaborations, financial health, and development. This role provided me with invaluable experience in leading a team and creating a supportive work environment. I also had the opportunity to collaborate closely with the supported housing arm of Signpost, deepening my understanding of the critical role that supportive services play in empowering individuals on their housing journey.
A Short-Lived Retirement
In 2017, after many fulfilling years in the housing sector, I made the difficult decision to retire. However, in February 2018, life presented me with the opportunity to start working with AGS Support. Joining AGS has been a truly rewarding experience. As the HR and Compliance Manager, my role is to foster a compassionate and inclusive work environment where our team feels valued, supported, and empowered to deliver the best possible service to our clients.
I believe that our greatest asset at AGS Support is our people. Every day, I am inspired by the dedication and passion demonstrated by our team members, who go above and beyond to make a difference. Therefore, my focus is on nurturing a positive work culture that encourages personal and professional growth, promotes work-life balance, and ensures the well-being of our employees.
Outside of work, I find joy in spending time with my two boys. I now live in sunny Somerset, which provides a beautiful backdrop for family adventures and cherished moments.
I am grateful to be part of the AGS Support family and feel fortunate to be working alongside a team of compassionate individuals who share the same vision of creating safe and supportive environments for those in need. Together with our incredible partner organisations, we are making a difference in the lives of individuals facing homelessness, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this organisation.
I look forward to working with you.
Kind regards,
Julie Adams – HR and Compliance Manager
