Refugee homelessness has increased by 350% over the past year in England
New figures have revealed a staggering 350% increase in homelessness among refugee households in England over the past year. Between January and March 2024, 4,840 refugee households were officially registered as homeless, a sharp rise from the 1,070 recorded during the same period in 2023. Additionally, 1,270 households faced the threat of homelessness, more than double the previous year’s number.
This alarming trend is largely attributed to government policies that require refugees to vacate asylum accommodation within 28 days of receiving their status, leaving many without enough time to secure stable housing.
Advocates and charities have expressed deep concern over this issue, arguing that the current system is ill-equipped to handle the needs of vulnerable refugees. The rapid escalation in homelessness underscores the pressing need for a more humane approach that ensures refugees have the support they need to transition into secure housing.
